MAIN MENU OF ACTIVITIES

Book Making as a Creative Process

STEP 1: BRAINSTORM IDEAS

In the first step of this literacy activity, we will explore the role of brainstorming in the creative process.

Materials:  A sheet of paper and a pencil or pen.

On a sheet of paper, brainstorm ideas for your story. There is no idea too silly or simple!

  • Is there something funny or interesting that happened recently?
  • Would you like to write about a fictional character or a historical figure?

STEP 2: SELECT IDEAS

The creative process includes plenty of time for reflection. For the second step of our literacy activity, we will review the list of all the ideas brainstormed to select the ideas for the story.

Materials:  The brainstorming list you developed.

Wait a day or two and then review the list of ideas. A time of waiting is considered a period of reflection and is deemed to be an essential step in the creative process. Ideas return to us with flashes of new insights and energy. These elements are critical for developing our creativity!

Questions to ask yourself while you review your ideas:

  • Do any of the ideas stand out to you?
  • Which one would you like to write about?
  • Are there any new ideas or thoughts to add
  • What idea(s) will you put into your story?

STEP 3: TeLL THE STORY

Materials:  The brainstorming notes and a pencil or pen.

Review your ideas and add more details.

  • Who are all of the characters in your story?
  • Where does your story take place?
  • What happens in your story?
  • What drawings and pictures can help tell your story?

STEP 4: GET READY TO CREATE

Materials:  Make a Book Materials (below) OR paper; stapler, glue, OR tape; scissors; pencils, colorful pencils, OR pens.

In step four of this literacy activity, organize your workspace with the paper and book materials to write your story.

  • Listening to music can encourage creativity.
  • Take breaks along the way - it takes time to put together a book!
